Alicante golf, which is designed by Severiano Ballesteros, is considered to be one of the best maintained and designed golfcourses in Spain. A main attraction of this course is the ruins of a roman village from the 1st century located in the middle of the 14th hole. These ruins surfaced during the constructon of the couse and you have to fly over them to reach the green. At the end of the course you will find hotel Hesperia Alicante Golf & Spa, only 800 metres from the sea.

Alenda, a golf course designed by Roland Favrat. He designed it with the aim of respecting the lay of the land and the vegetation proper to the area as much as possible. The golf course is edified in a way that makes the first 9 holes easy and fun to play for everyone and the second nine holes more tricky and require higher levels of concentration. Hole 17 & 18 is a big challenge even for the most practised golfer.

Font del llop, American design and Scottish layout is the feauture for this golf course situated just a few minutes from Alicante airport. A playing area of international size and of which every green has it’s own personality.

Bonalba, a grand golf course located just 2km from San Juan beach, perfect after a sweatily golf tour.

Torrevieja, loads of posibilities

Monday, August 29th, 2011

The city of Torrevieja lies about 45 km south west of Alicante. You can reach Torrevieja via the road N 332, a wonderful road along the Costa Blanca. If you have some time discover the beauty of the area via this road – you will love it’s views. Torrevieja marks a kind of language line between the traditional valencian/catalan in the north of the costa blanca and the spanish wide castellano spanish. Is worthwile to rent a car in Alicante Airport to Discovery the city and the Costa Blanca.

 Torrevieja

Torrevieja

The entire area around Torrevieja and Orihuela is famous for their salt production. Huge salt lakes surround the road down from Alicante.

It is impressive and fascinating every time I see the huge salt mountains producing annually more than half a million tons (it makes you respect your way you will use your salt and pepper next time). So if you visit the area of Torrevieja spend some time on your way to it.

The city get’s its name from an old tower (old=vieja ; tower=torre), was first mentioned around 1800. It became famous in 1802, when it took over the salt administration from Orihuela.

Apart of the salt industry, tourism and fishing keep the city alive. The harbor surrounded by many Torrevieja hotels, gives home to 300 fishing ships and over 900 private sport boats. A wonderful view especially when sun sets.

From a sightseeing point of view you best start your way exploring Torrevieja by foot beginning at the harbor. Along with Church of “la inmaculata conception” a visit to the museum of sea and salt (museo del mar y sal) and the fish market.

On our last visit we were for this crowded event of auctioning fish.

A Journey through History
The development and formation of a people is influenced greatly by its past, especially one that is shaped by the presence of various ancient civilizations. It is therefore essential that this past is made known and passed on to all those people who visit MARQ

As well as being a professional institution and an important educational space, the new Provincial Archaeology Museum of Alicante also provides a spectacular and entertaining experience.

The museum offers visitors the opportunity to find out about the various methods and techniques that are associated with archaeology. These are explained in three galleries dedicated to: Field Archaeology, Urban Archaeology and Underwater Archaeology. Various dioramas, audio-visual presentations and interactives provide visitors with a detailed insight into the techniques that archaeologists use to discover the past. These provide valuable information which is displayed in an attractive and didactic way.

Furthermore, the museum has various exhibition spaces for temporary displays and is equipped with a full range of installations to undertake a variety of investigation, conservation, restoration, cataloguing and dissemination projects.

MARQ is divided into various thematic sections which provide visitors with the opportunity to enjoy an emotive journey through the local history. On entering the exhibition area, visitors are immediately submerged into the local geography of Alicante and are shown the rich and varied nature of its natural and monumental landscapes. From here the historical journey begins through the permanent galleries dedicated to Prehistory, the Iberians, the Romans, the Medieval Age and the Modern and Contemporary Historical Periods.

In MARQ the various galleries are linked by thematic introductory sections which provide chronological continuity to the displays and which are enhanced by interactive consoles. These provide detailed information on the sites, including descriptions of the archaeological objects on display and explanations on the different ways of life of the various cultures

Alicante, more than sun and beaches

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

In Alicante there are lots of things to do and see: museus, fiestas, gastronomy, parks, and History!

El Tossal de Manises is the site of the Roman town of Lucentum, the ancient city of Alicante. It is located on top of a hill (tossal) near to the coast and at a height of 38 metres above sea level. It is in the La Albufereta area of Alicante, about 3.5 kilometres from the modern day city centre. The entire urban area of Lucentum (around 25,000 m²) has survived today and is surrounded by a perimeter wall, some 600 metres long. Since 1961 the site has been declared a Monument of Historic and Artistic Importance.

The origins of the site date back to the end of the 5th or beginnings of the 4th century BC, although little of this early occupation is actually known. However, at the end of the 3rd century BC significant changes occurred to the site. Fortifications were built which completely surrounded the site with towers and in some stretches, an antemural. This fortification would change the nature of the settlement site forever, and would determine its physical characteristics and extent of later building work and the Roman town.

This first urban phase was destroyed around 200 BC and el Tossal went through a long period of abandonment and decline. This began to change at the end of the 3rd century BC which is indicated by the evidence of a new period of construction in which the town walls were rebuilt. From the middle of the 1st century BC important building works were begun, during which time the entire urban street plan was restructured. During the rule of Augustus, the first Roman Emperor, the town acquired the status of municipium which meant that it governed itself and had its own magistrates and institutions of a clearly Roman nature. This is when the name of Lucentum is first recorded epigraphically and historically. At the end of the 1st century BC and throughout the 1st century AD the town enjoyed a prosperous period which is represented by various building works. These included the forum, two public bath houses, a new port, the sewage system, at least one temple, and the extension of the urban area outside the town walls.

At the end of the 1st century AD the first signs of decline appeared. This was the beginning of a period which would culminate with the abandonment and disappearance of the town in the 3rd century AD. After a period of various and sporadic use during which the site was used as a source for building materials, the area was once again occupied. Between the 8th and 10th centuries AD the site became a maqbara or cemetery, defined by Islamic funerary rites.

Enjoy “Hogueras” in Alicante, tipical Spanish …

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

The Hogueras de San Juan fiestas in Alicante coincide with the Summer solstice and are like a smaller version of Las Fallas in Valencia. Is worthwhile hiring a cheap car at Alicante city center or Altet airport to discover also the region.

Wood and paper maché structures (hogueras)are erected around the city center and suburbs, and next to each one an open-air cafe is put up, with tables and a stage where bands play. These open air cafes are called barracas, and the local people belonging to one barraca or another contribute money all year round to finance lunches, dinner and drink. Some families eat all their meals in the barraca all week.

After evening dinner, live bands start to play in the barracas, and dancing goes on all night. If you are one of the thousands of people visiting Alicante and don’t belong to a barraca, don’t worry – there are plenty of larger barracas open to the public where you pay for your drinks, but the live music is always free.

On the last night of fiestas, at midnight an enormous palmtree-shaped firework is let off from the top of Alicante castle, overlooking the city. From this moment on, and according to a strict timetable set by Alicante’s firemen, the hogueras are burnt one by one. One of the highlights of the evening for the children is when the firemen turn the hoses on the crowds every time fire is successfully put out.

Many Spanish towns have a kind of local beauty contest in the weeks leading up to their fiestas, in which a girl is chosen to represent the fiestas. Alicante is no exception, and the Belleza de Foc (“Beauty of the Fire”!) has quite a leading role not only during the San Juan fiestas, but also in all sorts of official celebrations attended by municipal dignataries throughout the year (official carol services, sports and cultural events, museum inaugurations etc.)

For five nights after the San Juan Hogueras fiestas have finished, firework displays are held on the main Postiguet Beach. Thousands of alicantinos of all ages, stroll down to the beach at half past eleven each night, sit on the sand, and marvel at the wonderful displays which begin each night at midnight

Bellea del Foc

Bellea del Foc

Alicante has a bull ring which is usually used for open-air concerts, but during the San Juan Hogueras Fiestas a full programme of corridas is attended by some of Spain’s best known bullfighters. A few years ago, they weren’t very popular at all, but ever since a European Union motion tried to ban bullfighting, the corridas have become more and more popular, and these days are sell-outs.
