Monday market in Gernika

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Everybody comes to Gernika on Mondays. The reason is a market that goes beyond the trade exchange and the food routine and becomes a fair of colours, flavours and fragrances. There is no better place for knowing the good products and fruits land offers us, as there is no other event in the Basque Country with these characteristics and size: more than 350 stands coming from the whole region of Busturialdea evidence that certain ancient traditions are still valid in the 21st century. During the whole year, the central Mercado Square has an intense activity from early in the morning: farmers (men and women) bring the best of their farmhouses and bread ovens, of their poultry yards and pigsties, of their seedbeds and greenhouses and show their products as if they were works of art. You only need to wander around the stands in autumn months -the most productive- to see that, indeed, everybody should visit Gernika-Lumo on Mondays.
