Castellon Tourist Info
Castellón or Castelló is one of the three provinces of the Valencian Community. This one is located in the north part and bordered by the provinces of Valencia, Teruel and Tarragona and surrounded by the Mediterrean. Its capital is sited in Castellón de la Plana, but we can also distinguish other major cities like Villareal, Burriana, la Vall d´Uixó or Vinaros.
We may remember you its a bilingual territory, with almost all inhabitants who speak Spanish and many also speaking Valencian, the regionally-wide co-official language. Then you can find same name in the both languages, as per example, its capital, called Castellón de la Plana or Castelló de la Plana, in Valencian or commontly know as Castellón.
Castellón is the capital city of this province, in the east of Spain, on the Costa de Azahar by the Mediterranean Sea. This city ancestral home was placed on the hill of La Magdalena, at the foot of the Desierto de las Palmas mountain range, and moved later towards the plain, closest to the sea. Nowadays we can still find the remains of walls and towers that certify the name of Castellón (diminutive of castle) de La Plana (the plain) where was later located.
For that reason, year after year its inhabitants celebrate the Fiestas de la Magdalena as a reminder of this historical event. Lot of people takes part in a popular and massive romeria (pilgrimage) called the Romeria de les Canyes which goes to the ancient chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene. But during this time, you can also participate in Castellón Fair and Festival of La Magdalena which will give you testimony of a living city. This festival invades the streets with concerts, fireworks, performers, international musical groups, gaiata (local festival monument) and collas (local festival groups).
Probably this will be a good period to visit Castellón and taste its simple and elaborate cuisine. It blends the best of the Mediterranean Sea with local vegetables in the coastal area or Maestrazgo cuisine, in the inland region, with a rich yet simple cuisine which reach a special prestige. We suggest you try this cuisine with its wines of Protected Geographical Indication, Vins of the Terra of Castellón.
