Capital of the Costa Blanca, Alicante is a major centre on the eastern coast of Spain. Known to the Greeks and Romans as the ‘The White Fortress,’ Alicante boasts over 2000 years of history from it’s prime position between the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.

Alicante view • The huge popularity of Alicante is largely due to the superb climate and fine range of beaches in the area including Postiguet, la Albufereta and the beautiful San Juan. The Cabo de las Huertas offers secluded rocky coves whereas naturist beaches can be found at El Saladar and Los Judios.
• Rising above Alicante is an imposing medieval fortress called the Castillo of Santa Barbara. As the monument is built on the slopes of mount Benacantil visitors gain access via cable car from Jovellanas Avenue or a lift from the Postiguet beach.
• As well as the panoramic view from the castle and its splendid architecture there is also the Museo de las Hogueras. The museum, housed within the castle, is renowned for it’s fascinating collection of papier-mache effigies that have been saved from the spectacular festival flames of Les Fogueres de Sant Joan which is held in Alicante at the end of June.

St Mary's Church • The oldest church in the city is the 16th century Church of St Mary. This stunning gothic and baroque church was built on the site of an ancient mosque erected by the Moors which is an appropriate reflection of the dramatic shifts that have taken place throughout Spain’s history.
• The Concathedral de St Nicholas of Bari, the ruined Castle of St Ferdinand and the oldest bullring still in use in Spain are a small selection of the vibrant historical attractions the city retains. Spain’s modern artists are paid homage to at the Eusebio Sempere Museum along with works by Miro, Gris and Picasso.

walking in Alicante • Elegant promenades and cafes surround the city centre’s pleasant harbour from which ferries leave daily for the Marine Reserve and natural monument of the Island of Tabarca. • The island has a rich history that is evident in its ancient fortifications, 18th century church and castle of San José.
