In 1996 the passenger terminal was renovated and redesigned to increase the annual passenger potential of the airport to 8 million. That figure was exceeded in 2003 and ongoing plans to extend the passenger terminal building, car park, runway and commercial aircraft apron will commence shortly. Long-term plans include the creation of a railway station in the terminal building to link the imminent AVE stations in Alicante and Elche to provide fast convenient rail links throughout Spain. |

A recommended location for observing the runway can be found along the perimeter fence that runs parallel to El Altet Road. At this point there are remnants of the old road, small asphalt hills, which offer an excellent vantage point. El Altet Road can reached by leaving the airport and taking Torrellano Road until you reach a left turn with El Altet. |
