Birmingham International Airport opened on 8th July 1939 on the current location at Elmdon on the outskirts of Birmingham city in the central region of England, known as the Midlands. Owned and operated by Birmingham City Council as a municipal airport, Birmingham was originally designed to meet the needs of the residents and the industry of the city and it’s immediate surroundings and is now the UK's 5th largest airport.

During World War II civil aviation ceased and Birmingham Airport was requisitioned by the Air Ministry. The airport re-opened for civil flying in July 1946 temporarily under government control before responsibility was handed back to the local council in 1960. As international flights became available, the terminal and the runway were expanded to cater for these growing needs. However, it soon became evident that a long term solution was required.

In 1984 a new Main Terminal was completed providing the capacity for 3 million passengers and July 1991 saw the opening of the second terminal; the Eurohub. The Eurohub was the first terminal in the world to combine domestic and international passengers. As a result, the greatest distance passengers have to walk to, from and between flights is only 250 metres, all within a target transfer time of just 25 minutes.

This large, modern airport handles 9 million passengers per year to over 100 destinations throughout Europe, North America and Asia including Alicante, Amsterdam, Ashkhabad, Barcelona, Brussels, Cancun, Dominican Republic, Dubai, Dubrovnik, Frankfurt, Geneva, Karachi, Lahore, Lyon, Madrid, Mahon, Malaga, Milan, New York, Nice, Palma, Prague, Santorini, Shannon, Skiathos, Stockholm, Tashkent, Toronto, Toulouse, Vienna and Venice.

Within the main passenger terminals there is a comprehensive range of facilities provided to enhance your journey including, a bank, currency exchange and numerous cash dispensers, a range of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, a 24 hour medical centre, wireless internet access, comprehensive baby care facilities, comfortable departure lounges, a smart Business centre with related services exclusive to the Business Class traveller and a number of car hire companies.

There is easy access to Birmingham Airport via a variety of methods including a range of intercity, regional and local rail services with trains stopping at Birmingham International Interchange, only 500 metres from the Airport Passenger Terminals and linked by the automatic SkyRail system. The Airport is also at the centre of the UK's motorway network and only 1.6km from junction 6 of the M42, or a short drive to Birmingham city centre via the A45. The main car park is located in front of the terminal building for short and long stay parking. Frequent, regular bus services operate from the airport to Birmingham city centre and a number of cities throughout Britain. Taxis are also available from the main terminal forecourt and operate 24 hours a day.
