Bristol International Airport was opened in May 1957 at Lulsgate Bottom on the site of a disused RAF airfield in the south west region of England known as the West Country. The new airport was acquired by the Bristol Corporation to replace the city’s historic, but outdated airport in nearby Whitchurch. During the first year of operation Bristol Airport proved to be successful with a throughput of 33,000 passengers and 608,000 kilos of freight. Within a decade the growing demands of international aviation created the need for expansion of the airport, the runway was lengthened and the terminal building extended. The rapid expansion of Bristol Airport continued throughout the 1980s, which is highlighted by a development budget of £13.5million in 1985 providing an extended aircraft-parking apron, new fire station, extended Departure Lounge and improved airfield drainage followed by a further £4.3 million development project in 1989. By the middle of the 1990s passenger numbers had exceeded a million a year and the local city council sold the airport in 1997 to generate the investment needed to meet the demands based on future capacity predictions.

On March 3rd 2000 the New Terminal was opened as a replacement of the old building, which was converted to office use. By 2003 passenger numbers had reached a massive 3.8 million and the list of destinations served by Bristol International expanded to include all major locations throughout Europe. The new main passenger terminal provides a comprehensive range of facilities to meet the needs of travellers including a currency exchange, numerous cash dispensers, wireless internet access, comprehensive baby care facilities, restaurants and cafes, comfortable departure lounges, smart Business lounges with related services exclusive to the Business Class traveller and a number of car hire companies.

There is easy access to Bristol International by road with clear signposts directing the route south from the city centre on the A38. The airport is situated 8 miles from Bristol city centre and the main car park is located on the airport site for long stay parking with a free connecting bus service to the terminal building. The train services for Bristol from London, Cardiff, Bath, Exeter and Plymouth regularly stop at the local station, Bristol Temple Meads, approximately 7 miles from the airport. The Bristol International Flyer express coach service connects Bristol Temple Meads with the airport every 20 minutes throughout the day with an adult single fare costing £4. A convenient and regular local bus service also operates between the airport, Bristol city centre and Western-super-Mare running every hour during the day and calling at a number of local stops. Taxis are also available from the terminal forecourt and are operated by Bristol International Cars.
