The
main airport in the Republic of Ireland is situated in the north
east six miles from the centre of Dublin at Collinstown. The inaugural
flight from Dublin Airport took place on January 19th 1940 and began
the first regular services to Liverpool from Ireland during the
Second World War. The Airport Terminal building opened in the spring
of 1941 boasting a stunning design modelled on the bridge of a luxury
liner, underlining the many close relationships between maritime
travel and aviation.
A continual programme of runway extensions, terminal enhancements and improvements has been carried out over the years by Dublin Airport creating the large, modern airport currently serving the Irish capital city. This busy European Airport handles over fifteen million passengers per year to domestic destinations and major international locations, including London, Paris, New York and Amsterdam.
W The airport terminals at Dublin Airport are equipped with state-of-the-art systems covering a huge area. The modern passenger terminals provide a range of services along a concourse known as ‘The Street,’ to enhance the travelling experience, including 25 high quality shops, restaurant, bars and cafes. Throughout the airport complex access is easily available to a number of currency exchanges, wide ranging banking facilities, wireless internet access, comprehensive baby care facilities, children’s entertainment areas, comfortable departure lounges and smart all purpose business centres. Dublin Airport Church opened in 1964 and is located one minutes walk from the arrivals door and is open to the public for mass and confession.
A car park is located adjacent to the terminal buildings, which is strictly for dropping off and collecting passengers. Short-term parking is available directly opposite the terminal buildings and long-term parking is available along the east perimeter of the airport. A free shuttle bus runs continuously between the terminal buildings and the long-term parking area. Regular bus services are also available from outside the terminal to the main train stations in the Dublin area, including Heuston, Connolly and Howth Junction Stations. Dublin Airport is accessible by over 700 buses daily to many other areas in and around Dublin with an adult single fare costing approximately 6 euros. Alternatively, taxis are available from outside the Arrivals Building and operate 24 hours a day with an average fare to the city centre of 18 euros.
