Philip opened Nottingham East Midlands Airport in 1965 on the site
of a former Royal Air Force base. Owned and operated by Nottingham
City Council as a municipal airport, Nottingham East Midlands was
originally designed to meet the needs of the residents and the industry
of the city and it’s immediate surroundings, and is now one of the
UK's fastest growing airports.
Nottingham East Midlands Airport boasts a convenient location in the centre of England, surrounded by the cities of Nottingham, Derby and Leicester and within easy reach of Sheffield, Stoke upon Trent and Tamworth. This superb location guaranteed the success of the new business and the growing demands of international aviation quickly created the need for rapid expansion of the airport. Throughout the 1980’s significant investment was made to facilitate carefully planned re-development, expansion and modernisation of the airport site. In 1993 Nottingham East Midlands became the first major regional airport to enter the private sector, purchased by the National Express Group for a price of £24.3 million to generate the investment needed to meet the demands based on future capacity predictions.
This large, modern airport handles 4.38
million passengers per year to over 40 destinations throughout Europe,
including Amsterdam, Paris and Rome. From May 5th 2005 services will
also be available to the Dominican Republic, Orlando and Cancun.
The main passenger terminal consists of an Arrivals Area, Departures
Hall, International Departure Lounge and Domestic Departure Lounge
over two floors. Within the terminal there is a comprehensive range
of facilities provided to enhance the flight, which include a currency
exchange and numerous cash dispensers, a range of shops, restaurants,
cafes and bars, wireless internet access, comprehensive baby care
facilities, comfortable departure lounges, a smart Business centre
with related services exclusive to the Business Class traveller and
a number of car hire companies.
There is easy access to the Airport from all parts of the UK, either by road or by public transport. The Airport is also at the centre of the UK's motorway network with direct access from the M1.The main car park is located in front of the terminal building for short and long stay parking. The railway stations of Loughborough, Long Eaton, Nottingham and Derby are all situated locally to Nottingham East Midlands Airport with regular bus connections available. Frequent, regular bus services also operate from the Airport to Nottingham city centre and a number of cities throughout Britain. Taxis are also available from the main terminal forecourt operated by Checker Cars 24 hours a day.
