The Queen opened Edinburgh Airport during 1977 on the site of a First World War aerodrome; RAF Turnhouse, which was established for the Royal Flying Corps in 1915. For many years it fulfilled a military role before responsibility was handed from the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of Aviation in 1960. The airport is currently located 7 miles west of Edinburgh city centre in central Scotland within easy reach of Edinburgh, Fife, Tayside, Aberdeenshire and the Borders. Over the last two decades Edinburgh has become one of the fastest growing airports in Scotland with continual expansion and refurbishment to meet the demands of the civil aviation industry. The airport currently consists of two runways, a large main passenger terminal and the associated buildings and services required to facilitate the day to day running of a large European airport. This busy, modern airport handles 7.8 million passengers per year to 80 destinations throughout Europe including Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and a regular transatlantic crossing direct to New York.

Within the main passenger terminal there is a range of services provided to enhance the journey including a currency exchange, numerous cash dispensers, familiar high street stores, a selection of restaurants, cafes and bars, wireless internet access, comprehensive baby care facilities, a comfortable departure lounge, a smart Business lounge with related services exclusive to the Business Class traveller and a number of car hire companies.

There is easy access to Edinburgh Airport by road with clear signposts directing the route from the two-level junction on the A8 midway between the Gogar and Newbridge roundabouts. The short stay car parks are conveniently located in front of the terminal building, whilst long stay parking is located near the eastern perimeter of the Airport and is connected to the terminal by a courtesy bus every 10 minutes. The main train services for Edinburgh stop at Waverley Train Station in the city centre a short bus, or taxi ride from the airport. Most train services also operate from Edinburgh Haymarket station, which is on the main bus route between the airport and city centre. The main line trains through Edinburgh provide frequent services to all areas of Scotland and England.

There is an express bus service to Edinburgh city centre; No. 100, which operates 24 hours a day every 10 minutes at peak times through the day and every 30 minutes during the night. The ticket cost is £3.00 for an adult single and £5.00 return with a journey time of approximately 25 minutes terminating at Waverley Bridge, near to the main railway and bus stations, just off the city's main street; Princes Street. Taxis are also available from a designated rank beside the coach park outside the UK arrivals hall and are operated by Executive Onward Travel.
