Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is the southernmost city in Portugal. The largest, busiest and one of the oldest settlements in the region, Faro is situated on the south west coast of the Iberian peninsular near the Cape of Santa Maria. The majority of visitors are attracted to the wide diversity of attractions that Faro offers, from long, sandy beaches with a comprehensive range of facilities to superb ancient fortresses that illustrate the unique nature of the city.
It is widely believed that as a result of Faro’s perfect position on the Algarve the city’s was originally founded for fishing and defence purposes. A rich and vibrant history saw occupations by the Phoenician, Greek and Roman Empires in Faro and across Portugal. From early in the 8th century the Moors exerted influence across the region, until 1249. At this point King Afonso III conquered the city and later proclaimed himself king of Portugal and the Algarves.
The province suffered devastating earthquakes in 1532 and 1755; however, visitors to Faro will discover ancient architecture has survived the turbulent past. The old quarter of the city boasts a plaza that is the location for the impressive 13th Century Cathedral; the Sé. Opposite the Cathedral stands the 18th Century Episcopal Palace, which is now the home of the city’s archaeological museum, renowned for exhibiting a fascinating range of artefacts from prehistoric to contemporary eras. The museums in Faro are of a particularly high standard and visitors are offered insight into the maritime history of the Algarve at the Naval Museum. Whilst at the Ethnological Museum there are a number of exhibits that illustrate the assorted cultures and traditions of Faro.
The stunning 16th Century convent of Nossa Senhora da Assun??o is among a number of beautiful chapels that reflect Faro’s vibrant past. While at Milreu near the village of Estoi, 10km north of Faro the surviving Roman ruins that date back to the 1st Century include a bathhouse and temple. The coastline between Faro and Lagos continues to attract thousands of visitors each year from throughout Portugal and northern Europe.
