Situated in the Atlantic Ocean 100km from the north west coast of Africa is the second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura. Evidence of the earliest settlements on the island have been dated to 200 BC and continue to cause debate concerning the historic origins of the region, although, there is a general consensus that African influenced cultures flourished for thousands of years on Fuerteventura. In 1408, Juan Bethencourt of Spain expanded his control within the Canary Islands and conquered Fuerteventura introducing the Spanish traditions and customs that are now a dominant feature of the island’s six municipalities La Oliva, Puerto del Rosario, Betancuria Antigua, Tuineje and Pájara. These regions offer a rich variety of sedate villages that reflect the serene nature of Fuerteventura.

The island’s capital, Puerto del Rosario, is located in the centre of the east coast and is the most heavily populated town on an otherwise tranquil island. The capital offers visitors access to all regional municipal buildings, a number of fine museums and a wide range of excellent shopping facilities. Located in the town centre is the impressive church of the Virgin del Rosario, which is dedicated to the regional patron saint.

Formerly a fishing village, Corralejo in the north has developed into the busiest tourist resort on the island with a large harbour and comprehensive range of amenities. The nearby Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo has been a protected area since 1960 consisting of protected golden sand dunes and idyllic beaches.

Unlike the other predominantly volcanic islands within the Canary Archipelago, Fuerteventura boasts over 150 superb sandy beaches and bays along 340km of coastline. The beaches at Corralejo, Cotillo, Caleta de Fuste, Pozo Negro, Jandia and Cofete are of an extremely high standard and are considered to be amongst the best in the world attracting the majority of Fuerteventura’s visitors each year.
