With over 4 million visitors a year the small island of Fuerteventura
continues to develop efficient transport links that consistently provide
cheap and convenient international services to support the demands
of the growing tourist industry. The majority of visitors to the island
arrive at the modern, international airport, which handles a large
number of direct flights to and from all the major cities across Europe.
The airport is located in El Matorral five kilometres from the centre
of Puerto del Rosario. A cheap and reliable daily bus service is available
from opposite the terminal building and connects the airport with
the centre of the capital every hour between 07:45 and 20:45, at a
cost of 0.90 €. Also available directly from the airport is a more
limited bus route to the south of the island, Morro Jable. The service
runs from Monday to Saturday departing from the airport terminal at
09:00, 13:45 and 18:00 and tickets cost 5.70 €. Alternatively, taxis
are available from the terminal building offering reasonable fares
across the island.
Fuerteventura
boasts 6 harbours that are destinations for regular ferry services
from all over the Canary Islands. The large port at Puerto del
Rosario is the main commercial harbour on Fuerteventura servicing
shipping and fishing vessels. The small marina at nearby Puerto
Castillo offers facilities more appropriate to yachts and smaller
pleasure boats. Fuerteventura is approximately 98km long and only
30km at the widest point. This relatively small area is made easily
accessible to visitors by regular daytime bus services that provide
cheap transportation throughout the island.
The local bus routes wind through picturesque
scenery offering visitors the opportunity to experience the idyllic
towns and villages across Fuerteventura. Many visitors choose to
travel the island at their own pace by hiring a vehicle appropriate
to their requirements. Cars, motorbikes and bicycles are widely
available at competitive prices and can offer the freedom that is
required to fully enjoy this dynamic island.
