Costa Brava Airport is the
international airport, which serves the northeastern corner of the
Iberian Peninsular. The airport is situated within the city limits
of Vilobi D’Onyar and Aiguaviva, approximately 12km from Girona. Costa
Brava Airport handles a number of daily internal connections and international
chartered flights and is becoming the principle airport for the coastal
and Pyrenees regions, with almost 1½ million passengers in
2003. Barcelona Airport continues to be the main airport for Catalonia
and at only 85 km from Girona it offers visitors an alternative point
of arrival.
Major renovations have recently been completed on
Costa Brava Airport and there are currently only limited transport
links upon arrival. However, developments are underway to produce
a comprehensive transport system that will meet the demands of
a busy, modern airport. At present, bus connections from the terminal
run according to flight arrivals and the cost of a ticket to Girona
is 1.65 euros for a single journey and 3.25 euros return. A single
ticket to Barcelona is 8.70 euros single and 15.80 euros for a
return. Taxis are available from Arrivals and provide a convenient,
direct route to any destination in the region with a fare to Girona
costing approximately 15 euros.
The main train station in Girona is
situated on Plaça dEspanya, on the west bank of the River
Onyar. The station operates the national RENFE trains, offering
various daily connections to all major Spanish towns, including
Madrid and Barcelona. The city’s central bus station is located
behind the train station and it provides cheap, frequent, connections
to resorts along the Costa Brava and destinations throughout Spain.
Alternatively, a wide range of vehicles are available to hire at
competitive prices providing the freedom that may be required to
fully enjoy the dynamic region surrounding the principle city of
Girona.
