Discovering Girona

Direct Charter Assurance from Star for Cheap Car Rental Girona

The province of Girona has a diverse range of splendid coastal resorts and charismatic inland villages within a short distance of the capital city, Girona. This northeastern corner of Spain has an abundant array of attractive features and a quality range of services that consistently attracts millions of visitors each year.

The coastal region to the east of Girona, known as the Costa Brava, is a popular destination for tourists who are attracted by the area’s numerous gorgeous locations. In the north of the Costa Brava is the beautiful town of Cadaqués, which is situated between dramatic mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The most dominant feature in the centre of town is the splendid Church of Santa Maria. At Port Lligat, a short walk from the town, access is available to Casa de Salvador Dalí, which was Dali’s house and home to his wife and is now a superb museum dedicated to the Cadaqués born artist.

Further south near the popular resort of l'Escala, is the ancient settlement of Empúries. This location is rich with Greek and Roman heritage that has been extensively excavated and is open to the public. South along the coast from l'Escala are a number of fabulous resorts that offer a wide range of services including L'Estartit, Begur, Palamõs, Sant Antoni, S'Agaró and Tossa de Mar.

The old town of Tossa de Mar is notable for it's Medieval walls and towers, and close proximity to a huge range of beaches. Platja Gran is Tossa de Mar's main beach located in the town centre, whilst Platja del Reig, Mar Menuda and Platja d'Es Codolar are only a few minutes away. Just south of Tossa de Mar are the beautiful sandy beaches of Llevador, Cala d'en Carlos, Cala Figuera, Llorell, Porto Pi, and Cala Morisca. Alternatively, the secluded resorts to the north of Tossa de Mar offer a coastal landscape filled with rocky cliffs, sandy beaches and pine forests such as those at Sant Jaume, Cala Bona, Pola, Giverola, Futadera and Salions.

The inland towns and villages around Girona provide visitors with the opportunity to discover the unique culture of the province. Ripoll lies to the north west of the capital and is renowned for the 1st Century Benedictine monastery that has a 12th Century roman sculpted gateway, one of the most stunning examples in Europe. The medieval city of Besalú also illustrates the rich heritage of the province of Girona with two Roman churches, Sant Vicenç and Sant Pere, and the 11th Century fortified bridge over the river Fluvià.
