The
Queen officially opened Glasgow Airport on June 27th 1966 at the
current location on the outskirts of Paisley on the central west
coast of Scotland. The airport is situated 8 miles west of Glasgow
city centre within easy reach of Edinburgh, Fife, Tayside, Aberdeenshire
and the Borders. Due to this prime location and the general growth
of package holidays the airport continued to expand throughout the
1970s, with airlines such as Laker, Tarom, Britannia, British Midland,
Iberia and Channel serving the most popular destinations in Europe
direct from Glasgow. By the mid 1980s passenger numbers had reached
4 million and further expansion was required. In response a massive
terminal development programme began in 1989 to increase the size
of the terminal by 70%. The new International Pier was officially
opened in 1994 with an excellent range of facilities to support
international and trans-Atlantic flights. Glasgow Airport's second
terminal, T2, was officially opened in 2004 providing an additional
9 check in desks and a state of the art baggage screening system.
This busy, modern airport currently handles 7.8 million passengers
per year to 80 destinations throughout Europe including Amsterdam,
Paris, Berlin and regular transatlantic crossings to New York and
Canada
Within the main passenger terminals there are a range of services provided to enhance the journey including a currency exchange, numerous cash dispensers, familiar high street stores, a selection of restaurants, cafes and bars, wireless internet access, comprehensive baby care facilities, a comfortable departure lounge, a smart Business lounge with related services exclusive to the Business Class traveller and a number of car hire companies. There is easy access to Glasgow Airport by road with clear signposts directing the route from Junction 28 of the M8 Motorway. The short stay car parks are conveniently located in front of the terminal building, whilst long stay parking is located near the perimeter of the airport and is connected to the terminals by a courtesy bus every 5 minutes. The main train services for Glasgow Central, Ayr and the Clyde Coast stop at Paisley's Gilmour Street railway station situated two miles from the terminal, easily reached by taxi, or by regular bus services.
There are frequent bus services to Glasgow city centre; Service 905, which runs from the main terminal building to various locations in the city, including Glasgow Central and Queen Street Railway Stations, and Buchanan Street Bus Station.
