Gran
Canaria is located 210 km from the north coast of Africa in the
Atlantic Ocean and is the most developed of the Canary Islands.
This ‘miniature continent’ is a world famous tourist destination
with a huge variety of climates and landscapes that include volcanoes,
craters, waterfalls, mountains, pinewoods, palm groves, gorgeous
sandy beaches and deserted plains. The island maintains the perfect
combination of modern resorts with quality facilities and secluded
beaches that continue to offer visitors to gran Canaria a secluded
retreat.
Gran Canaria's prime position in the Atlantic Ocean has attracted visitors to the region for over 2000 years from Romans, Moors, European colonialists and finally in 1479, the Spanish all of which has left a unique impression on gran Canaria. This rich heritage combines many of the cultures and traditions from over four continents providing a diverse array of attractions throughout the island.
Founded
500 years ago, Las Palmas de gran Canaria is the island’s capital
and the largest city in the Canary Islands. Las Palmas boasts a number
of historic monuments the most prominent of which is the city’s cathedral.
Construction on Santa Ana Cathedral began in 1500 and continued, sporadically,
for over 400 years creating a stunning blend of gothic and neoclassical
styles. The cathedral contains numerous significant artefacts and
visitors are welcome to enjoy the superb Diocesan Museum located in
the south wing. Santa Ana Square is also the location for several
stunning buildings that reflect the architectural style typical in
gran Canaria, including the Archiepiscopal Palace.
The enigmatic history of the province is thoroughly recorded in the high quality museums that are abundant in Las Palmas. The archaeological and cultural collections at The Canarian Museum are a fascinating record of Gran Canaria’s vibrant history, including evidence of the prehistoric tribes that originally inhabited the island. At Casa de Colon visitors will find a splendid range of exhibits that commemorate Christopher Columbus’s arrival to gran Canaria in 1492. Columbus replenished his fleets on the island before continuing his historic voyage across the Atlantic.
