Gran Canaria Mountains Gran Canaria's most appealing attributes are the huge variety of cultures and landscapes that are on display. The dynamic qualities that have created this unique island continue to attract the rich and famous from all over the world. The majority of visitors to gran Canaria are attracted to the resorts around the south coast, the most popular of which are, Puerto Rico, Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas with it’s awesome landscape of magnificent sand dunes. Fun seekers will discover the availability of a vast range of activities across these resorts including skydiving, horse riding, helicopter tours and submarine trips. Away from the south coast visitors can experience the cultures and lifestyles that are common to gran Canaria at one of the many towns and cities that have developed on the island. Galdar, in the north, was the capital of gran Canaria until 1483 and it continues to be a significant centre of commerce. The historic architecture visible in Galdar is also evident further south in Arucas where visitors will encounter the spectacular Parish Church of San Juan Bautista.

The town of Telde on the east coast has the widest shoreline on gran Canaria ranging from golden sands to coarse pebbles surrounded by a number of attractive historic buildings including windmills and lighthouses. The nearby municipality of Ingenio is the location for Guayadaque, a stunning national park that boasts amazing views of the mountains, and green valleys dominating the landscape.

Gran Canaria Tolentino The Caves of Barranco de Guayadeque are located on the eastern edge of the mountains and are currently in use by the local people who have converted them into houses. A particularly remarkable example is the cave system that has been carved into a village, complete with cobbled walkways, a church, bar and street lamps. In the west of gran Canaria is San Nicholas de Tolentino, an area of outstanding natural beauty, which offers a rich artistic and archaeological heritage. Whilst the mountainous regions inland present the opportunity to discover idyllic typically Canarian villages set in dramatic scenery such as Santa Lucia, Terjede and San Bartolome de Tirajana.
