Ibiza is located not far
from the east coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea and is the
third largest in a group of islands known collectively as the Balearic
Islands. World famous as a tourist destination with quality facilities
to cater for the large number of visitors each year there is also
a rich heritage offering a diverse array of attractions across the
island. The vibrant history of the province is recorded from 654
BC with the arrival of the Carthaginians through Roman and Moorish
occupations to a Catalan restructuring in the 11th century, all
of which has left a unique impression on Ibiza.
Originally founded by the Carthaginians, Ibiza Town is Europe's most ancient fortress city and the capital of the island. The history of this southeast coastal region is visible through the architecture of the old town district known as D'Alt Vila or ‘High Town’. The entrance to the old town is through the Portal de Tablas that is part of the intact ancient city wall. At the top of D'Alt Vila is the awe inspiring Cathedral of Our Lady of the Snows from which panoramic views of the locality are available. Adjoining the cathedral is the Museo Arqueológico de Ibiza y Formentera exhibiting s stunning collection of archaeological artefacts.
Situated in a central west coast bay is the tourist mecca San Antonio that is renowned for it’s gorgeous beaches and premier night clubs, including Pacha, Space and Amnesia. An excellent example of the fine sandy beach typical in and around San Antonio is Calo Des Moro, which is lined with world famous cafes and bars such as Café del Mar and the Coastline Café.
On the opposite coast is Santa Eulalia, Ibiza's third largest resort; it provides a more tranquil pace for the visitor. The picturesque town boasts a number of points of interest including the 16th century hilltop Church of our Lady of Jesus. The art gallery next to the church on Puig De Missa contains over 200 paintings by the famous Spanish impressionist Laureano Barrau.
The variety of attractions outside of these main towns continues to draw visitors to Ibiza from all over the world. For example, the 16th century Pirate Towers, which originally covered the entire island acting as an early warning defensive system, now offer the perfect platforms to gain panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. However, the most photogenic views on Ibiza are to be found at the southern tip of the island at Las Salinas Salt Flats where salt production has been carried out for over 2000 years.
