As
one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations Ibiza has consistently
provided a comprehensive transport system to the millions of visitors
that arrive each year. The island has a modern airport with fantastic
facilities that is located to the southeast, 7km from the capital
Ibiza Town. International flights and connections with Spain are
cheap and frequent, as are the transport links obtainable from the
airport to any location on the island. Daily bus services are available
from the airport to Ibiza Town departing every hour between 0700-2235
with a journey time of around 30 minutes. A number of bus routes
service the 541 km² of Ibiza providing a reliable means of
transportation for both inhabitants of and visitors to the island.
For example, the Disco Bus runs each hour between midnight and 06.30
and for just over a euro provides a service from one side of the
island to the other.
Taxis are conveniently situated outside
the airport terminal building and the journey to Ibiza Town should
cost approximately 10 euros. As of summer 2003 all taxis on the island
use a taximeter with two fare configurations. Firstly, there is Urbanas,
which is used when departure and destination locations are within
the same town. Secondly, there is Interurbanas that is appropriate
when the destination is outside the town of departure.
Ships to Ibiza leave from all major Spanish ports on
a regular basis. This allows for access via rail and road across Europe
and mainland Spain for those who are seeking an alternative to the
popular, bargain flights currently available. A unique mode of transport
that offers a fantastic view of the island not often experienced by
the visitor is the ‘Ibitren’, or mini train. There are several routes
on offer through different areas of Ibiza and all boast stunning scenery.
