La
Gomera is the second smallest of the Canary Island’s and is situated
28 kilometres west of Tenerife, off the north African coast. This
dramatically uneven island combines the beauty of lush forests, breathtaking
ravines and green valleys with a spectacularly steep coastline boasting
numerous small bays of fine sand. Visitors will find La Gomera to
be a tranquil retreat from the more popular tourist destinations elsewhere
in the archipelago.
The
landscape of the island is as captivating as it’s history, which has
created a rich and varied culture on La Gomera. An enigmatic prehistoric
tribal people are believed to have flourished for thousands of years
in the region before the arrival of the Europeans in the middle ages.
During the 15th century the Spanish conquered La Gomera introducing
many of the traditions and customs that are now a dominant feature
of the island.
An excellent example of La Gomera’s unique ancient traditions is the whistling language known as Silbo that has been used by gomerans for centuries to communicate across the island’s mountainous terrain. The 21st century has caught up even on La Gomera and modern communications have meant that Silbo is rapidly becoming obsolete.
San
Sebastián, located on the east coast, is the capital and
main port of the island. Visitors will find a picturesque resort
that contains splendid buildings in the Canarian style. The capital
offers a number of fascinating points of interest including the
Church of the Asunción, the fortress remains at Torre del
Conde, the Museum Casa de Colón and the Pozo de la Aguada.
The dominating feature on La Gomera is the Garajonay National Park region where rain forests meet mountains to such a stunning effect UNESCO have declared Garajonay a ‘Property of Humanity.’ The highest peak in the area is the impressive Alto de Garajonay standing at 1487 meters. Located in Garajonay National Park is the largest town on La Gomera, Vallehermoso where visitors can enjoy a comprehensive range of facilities and superb beaches.
