The
majority of visitors to La Gomera arrive to the Canary Islands at
the international airport in the south of Tenerife. Tenerife Sur is
a large modern airport handling over 9 million passengers a year,
mainly from destinations throughout Spain and Western Europe. Excellent
connections exist between the airport and the port of Los Cristianos
enabling travellers to complete their journey by sea to the island
of La Gomera. There are cheap, regular bus services running between
the airport and the port, which is located 12km from Tenerife Sur.
Taxis are also available from arrivals and take about 20 minutes to
reach Los Cristianos, often proving to be the most convenient link
for those on a tight schedule.
There are a variety of vessels that
provide links between the ports of Los Cristianos and San Sebastián
de La Gomera. These include standard and fast-speed ferry services
that depart from Tenerife frequently throughout the day. The trip
takes an hour and a half by standard ferry and thirty minutes by
the fast-speed route.
The
small airport in the south of La Gomera was inaugurated in 1999 and
offers an alternative for visitors who do not wish to travel even
a short distance by sea. The newly built airport at Playa Santiago
handles a small number of flights between the Canary Islands. Flights
depart La Gomera twice daily for Tenerife North and Gran Canaria with
flight times of 35 and 45 minutes respectively. The island has a number
of comprehensive bus services that offer cheap and regular transport
across La Gomera. From the port at San Sebastian buses leave after
the arrival of passengers from the most recent ferry and stop anywhere
en route on request, although passengers are only picked up from designated
stops. Cars, motorbikes and bicycles are widely available to hire
at competitive prices and most visitors find that they provide the
freedom that is required to fully enjoy the dynamic island of La Gomera.
