La
Palma is located in the north west of the Canary Islands, 200 kilometres
west of Morocco. Known in the region as "Isla Bonita" or
beautiful island, La Palma is one of the most scenic locations in
the archipelago. The island’s dynamic landscape offers visitors an
abundance of natural beauty that ranges from volcanic mountains and
rugged cliffs to black beaches and lush tropical vegetation. One of
the main attractions of La Palma is that it has remained unaffected
by the modern world offering visitors peace, tranquillity and a taste
of a traditional Canarian way of life. For over two thousand years
a prehistoric tribal people, known in the Canary Island’s as the Guanches,
flourished on La Palma. After the arrival of Alonso Fernández
de Lugo in 1492 the island fell under Spanish control. This vibrant
history continues to influence the culture and traditions of La Palma,
which is illustrated in the diverse range of attractions in the towns
and villages across the island.
Santa Cruz de La Palma, located in the centre of the
east coast, is the capital of the island. The town boasts stunning
architecture, particularly the religious and civic buildings, which
have been maintained and restored to an excellent standard throughout
the last 500 years; the 16th century Town Hall and the Parish Church
of El Salvador are both excellent examples. The capital offers visitors
a number of points of interest including the Museum of Natural History
with a fine range of archaeological exhibits and the Sanctuary of
Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, which is dedicated to the town’s
patron saint and has an adjoining art gallery.
South
of the capital at Breña Baja is Playa de Los Cancajos, a popular
resort that offers a fine beach of small coves, crystal clear waters
and a wide range of facilities within a short distance of Santa Cruz
de La Palma. The second largest city on La Palma is Los Llanos de
Aridane a beautiful port town that is situated on the south west coast.
