Discovering La Palma

Direct Charter Assurance from Star for Cheap Car Rental La Palma

The vast majority of visitors to La Palma are attracted by the dramatic landscape of this tiny, peaceful Atlantic island. The volcanic origins of the Canary Islands continue to be the most dominating feature on La Palma; the last eruption was from Teneguía in 1971. The island’s central region is the location for the awesome, La Caldera del Taburiente, which is the world's largest volcanic crater. The circumference of the crater measures almost 17 miles, whilst the volcanoes steep ridges reach a depth of 3,500ft. These massive slopes are a National Park covered with dense laurel forests that are over 20 million years old. On the northern edge of La Caldera del Taburiente is the island's highest mountain Roque de los Muchachos. The summit of Muchachos is the location for an impressive international astronomical observatory and the grounds are open to visitors by appointment.

Situated on the west coast of La Palma is the popular resort of Puerto de Naos. This small village has an excellent beach of fine, black sand and a comprehensive range of facilities. In the nearby town of Tazacorte visitors will discover a small, harbour town with fine beaches surrounded by banana plantations. Mazo, on the east coast, is the location for the Belmaco Cave system, which boasts prehistoric inscriptions and an observation platform from which to gain fantastic coastal views.

Fuencaliente is the most southerly village of the island. It is surrounded by pine forests and vineyards that dramatically contrast with the volcanoes in the region, the most famous of which are San Antonio and Teneguía. La Palma occupies a prime position in the Atlantic Ocean from which to travel throughout the Canary Islands. Visitors who are seeking an excursion away from La Palma will find that the beautiful island of El Hierro is a short ferry trip away. El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands offering unspoilt countryside and hospitality that is legendary throughout the archipelago.
