Lanzarote Flag Lanzarote lies within the Canary Islands 100 kilometres west of Africa and roughly 1,000 kilometres from mainland Spain. Juan Bethencourt of Spain conquered the island in 1404 and from this point it has remained under Spanish control.

Puerto De Ca The capital of Lanzarote is Arrecife, a busy city located on the east coast. Visitors to the capital are offered a large number of splendid attractions that includes El Charco de San Gines, a saltwater lagoon in the city centre and La Casa de Los Arroyo, which is a patriarchal residence that houses the Blas Cabrera Scientific Centre. Whilst, the Castles of San Jose and San Gabriel are home to the International Museum of Modern Art and the Archaeological Museum, respectively. The capital also boasts the excellent Casa de la Culture Agustin de la Hoz and the 17th century Iglesia de San Gines, which is dedicated to the patron Saint of the City.

To the south of Arrecife is Puerto de Carmen, Lanzarote's busiest resort. This popular region features beautiful, golden beaches at Playa Grande, Playa de los Pocillos and Playa de Matagorda. North of Arrecife is Costa Teguise, Lanzarote´s second most popular resort, which revolves around the main beach area, Las Cucharus. The beaches in the area are of a fine quality with golden sands and a comprehensive range of facilities.
