Discovering Madrid

Direct Charter Assurance from Star for Cheap Car Rental Madrid

Madrid is situated in the centre of Spain, which is a prime position for visitors to gain easy access to any region in the country. The province has an abundance of splendid towns and villages that offer visitors a diverse range of attractions and monuments set in a varied inland landscape.

Thirty kilometres east of Madrid is Alcala de Henares, an old university town that proudly boasts 15th Century city walls, the church of Iglesia Magistral, the 17th Century Convent of Bernardas and Casa de Cervantes, which is the former home of the author of Don Quixote. The town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 50 km north west of Madrid, is the location for the Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial. This beautiful building complex is a combination of monastery, church and palace containing an ornate library and numerous works of art, including pieces by Rubens, Tintoretto, Titian and Veronese.

Aranjuez, a small town on the banks of the River Tagus, offers visitors to the region a number of charming attractions most notable of which are the 16th Century Palacio Real and the Casita del Labrador. At the Casita del Labrador access is available to the fantastic gardens and one of the most impressive collections of clocks and porcelain in the Iberian Peninsular. North east of Aranjuez is the attractive little town of Chinchón, which centres around an atmospheric main square, the Plaza Mayor. The arcaded main square is dominated by the 16th Century church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and lined with traditional wooden buildings.

To the south west of Madrid lie the hills and mountains of the Sierra de Guadarrama that are home to a number of Castilian mountain villages. One of the most picturesque of these hillside settlements is Buitrago, which is renowned for it’s ancient Moorish walls, ruins of a Mudéjar Castle and small Picasso Museum. Visitors to the ski resorts high in the mountains will discover many splendid towns, including Puerto de Navacerrada and Valdesquí.
