• Malaga is a diverse and vibrant city providing visitors with a superb
choice of amenities and a wide range of bars and restaurants. A
dynamic cultural heritage dating from its Phoenician origins in
1100 BC through Roman and then Moorish occupations ensures an abundance
of areas of special interest in the region.
• One of the major artistic forces of the Twentieth Century
was born in Malaga in 1881. At his birthplace on the Plaza de la
Merced can now be found the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation, which
is dedicated to the life and works of this prolific artist. The
Foundation is open to the public daily and is free of charge.
• A major landmark in the area is the impressive walled fortress
La Alcazaba. Built by the Moors in the 11th Century on the site
of a Roman Fortress, dating back to 700 AD, Alcazaba is positioned
on the Gibralfaro Hill offering magnificent views across the city
and harbour.
• The ruins of a 2nd Century roman amphitheatre are found
below the entrance to Alcazaba and are currently under construction.
• Above Alcazaba is Gibralfaro Castle which was completed
in the 15th Century by the Muslim King Yusuf.
• Dating from 1528 the city’s cathedral was built on the site of the
mosque, which remained after the expulsion of the Moors from Spain.
• Inside can be found the Cathedral Museum containing a rich
display of sculpture and paintings. Located next to the cathedral
on Plaza del Obispo is the Diocesal Museum that houses a substantial
collection of religious artefacts.
