Malaga Airport Tower Life for Malaga Airport began on 1st September 1919 when Didier Daurat established the first Spanish airline route in partnership with Pierre Latécoère and the French airline Lignes Aeriennes Latécoère. The scheduled flight service linked France with Northern Africa via Spain passing through Toulouse, Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga, Tangiers and Casablanca. From these destinations Malaga Airport is alone in maintaining its original position continually adapting and expanding to meet the growing transport demands of the Costa del Sol.

In 1937 Malaga's aerodrome was used as a military air base and educational centre with the introduction of limited domestic and international flights on 12th July 1946. Completion of the first passenger terminal in 1948 signalled the early development of the commercial airport, which has become the gateway to the Costa del Sol for over 11 million visitors a year. Major renovations during the 1960s and 1990s were required to keep up with the increasing passenger traffic that now places Malaga as Spain's 4th largest airport. The Ruiz Picasso Terminal, designed by Ricardo Bofill was opened on 30th November 1991 and there are now flights to seventeen Spanish cities, sixty European capitals and destinations in America, Asia and Africa annually from Malaga. Future plans include the construction of a new terminal area, which will increase the airport's handling capacity to twenty million passengers a year.

Malaga Arrivals An innovative and creative use of space within the airport is illustrated within the Didier Daurat Exhibition Hall that offers a temporary platform for a wide range of talented artists. The National Museum of Airports and Air Transport is located in the original 1940s terminal building and features over 1,500 artefacts relating to Spanish aviation history. There is a comprehensive selection of amenities at Malaga Airport that range from a business centre complete with VIP lounges, a large shopping and entertainments centre, nine cafes and restaurants, banking and postal services and a 24 hour pharmacy.
