Staying in Malaga offers easy access to the many and varied sights of the Costa del Sol and surrounding areas, well known for its huge tourist economy, but also rich in history and culture.
• In the mountains
to the west of Malaga is the picturesque village of Mijas. One of
the best examples of a “white village” in Andalusia, Mijas has a
unique ancient square bullring and still maintains the tradition
of donkey taxis which can be hired in the central plaza to carry
passengers around the town.
• Continuing west along the Costa del Sol will bring you to
the popular resorts of Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengirola.
These Andalusian towns are renowned throughout northern Europe for
their holiday atmosphere and fine beaches.
• Further along this stretch of Mediterranean lie the towns of Marbella
and Estapona with Spain’s most popular golf courses in between.
This exclusive region attracts the young and rich from across
Europe. Marbella, in particular, offers designer boutique shopping,
first class restaurants and a port, which is home to a vast array
of luxury yachts throughout the year.
• For a more traditional landscape try heading east along
the coast from Malaga where the mountainous countryside is used
primarily for local agriculture. The main town to visit is the
idyllic Spanish village of Nerja famous for its ancient limestone
caves and stunning stalactites.
Malaga is situated in a prime position to take convenient short breaks at destinations throughout southern Spain. East of Malaga is Granada with the magnificent Alhambra. To the northwest is the Andalusian capital of Seville and further along the coast to the west is the port of Cadiz. A busy town, with frequent crossings to Gibraltar, Cadiz and the nearby town of Tarifa are popular for water sport activities particularly windsurfing.
