Menorca is a tranquil island located in the Mediterranean a short distance from the east coast of Spain. Geographically, it lies within the group known as the Balearic Islands, but the culture and landscape of Menorca are very far removed from the mass tourist destinations of Ibiza and Mallorca. Visitors have been drawn to Menorca for over 2000 years from the Romans, Greeks and Moors to the more recent empirical struggle between England and France.

Mahon, the capital city of Menorca is positioned on the eastern coast around one of the world's largest natural harbours. The rich heritage of the region is conserved through Mahon's stunning architecture reflecting the many varied influences that have shaped the city. There are a number of fascinating attractions in and around the capital including the Arch de San Roque that features remains of the medieval city wall, the 17th century Town Hall and the Church of Santa Maria, which was constructed in the 18th century. A few kilometres from Mahon are the ruins of the Roman Castle of Santa Agueda from which visitors will enjoy spectacular panoramic views.

Before 1721 Ciutdella was the island's capital, governing Menorca from a picturesque natural port in the west. A huge obelisk that marks the 16th century Turkish attack on the island, takes pride of place in Ciutdella's main square. Also located in the Plaza des Born are the 19th century Town Hall and Menorca's first rate National Museum. The 14th century Gothic Cathedral, which stands on the site of a former mosque, is an enduring image of Ciutdella's momentous history. In the centre of Menorca, protected by lush, green hills is the small, picturesque village of Ferreries. Visitors who leave the coastline have the opportunity to sample the excellent shopping facilities and lively Mediterranean atmosphere that are offered inland. Intriguing features are predominant throughout Menorca and one of the island's most important monuments is Naveta des Tudoms, the largest and best preserved prehistoric tomb on the island.
