On 24 March 1969, Minorca Airport was inaugurated at it’s current location in the east of the island, 4km from the capital, Mahon. From 1949 up to this point the small airport at San Luis had adequately met the air transport demands of this popular Balearic Island. However, during the 1960s there was enormous growth in the tourist industry throughout Menorca and a more suitable site was required. San Luis became the Mahon Royal Flying Club, continuing to provide the highly regarded Pilot and Aeromodelling School facilities and Mahon Airport became the main point of arrival for the majority of visitors to the island each year.
This modern, international airport exceeded 2.7 million passengers in 2003 and the predictions suggest that massive expansion plans will be necessary within the next ten years. Future plans are already in place to extend the aircraft apron, to construct a heliport area and a new control tower, and to adapt the general aviation apron. Overall, this development is expected to increase the airport’s passenger traffic to 3.8 million by 2010.
At present Mahon Airport handles a large number of daily, chartered flights to and from the main destinations across the Balearic Islands, mainland Spain and northern Europe with major growth in the amount of direct flights arriving each day.
