To the east of Almeria's capital city lies the hilltop, coastal town of Mojacar, one of the largest and most popular tourist resorts in the south eastern corner of the Iberian Peninsular. Mojacar boasts over 4000 years of rich and vibrant history, which makes this the oldest settlement in the region of Andalucia. This ancient town, positioned on the lower slopes of the Sierra Cabrera mountain range, offers contemporary visitors a range of splendid monuments and attractions that reflect the culture and traditions dominant in the region’s past and present. The most impressive of these monuments are the Moorish fortress of El Torreón, the 14th Century Church of Santa Maria and the 15th Century Arch of Luciana.

As one of the most famous of the renowned ‘white-washed villages' in the Province, Mojacar has managed to retain much of its original character and charm. The village’s traditional layout consists of a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets, each one leading to prominent positions that offer spectacular panoramic views over the Mediterranean Sea.

The coastal area below Mojacar is known as the Costa Calida. Seventeen kilometres of fine sandy beaches spread in both directions along the coast from the town providing peace and tranquillity alongside a wide range of excellent services and facilities.

Spreading west from the foot of the Sierra Cabrera range is the arid inland landscape of the Tabernas Desert. This area offers a dramatic contrast with the coastal region and because of its outstanding and unique natural beauty has been protected for a number of years.
