Travel Advice in Nerja

Direct Charter Assurance from Star for Cheap Car Hire Nerja

The small town of Nerja is located 50 kilometres from the provincial capital city of Málaga on the eastern tip of Spain. Nerja is in a prime location on the Costa del Sol, nestled between the dramatic mountain range of the Sierra Almijara and the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea.

This quiet fishing village has developed into a popular tourist destination with a superb choice of amenities and a wide range of bars and restaurants. The coastal region of the town attracts a large number of visitors boasting 16 kilometres of superb golden sandy beaches that provide a comprehensive selection of services. The route from Nerja to the main, Burriana Beach leads down the mountain slopes through the beautiful Gardens of Capistrano Playa, which is one of the finest formal gardens in the area.

Even though the tourist industry has undergone rapid growth recently the town remains virtually unchanged since ancient times. The old quarter of Nerja is typical of the region with a network of narrow, winding streets that are lined with white washed houses.

The rich and vibrant history of the Andalusian region is beautifully illustrated by a number of monuments located around Nerja including the 17th Century Church of El Salvador, a delightful mix of baroque and Moorish styles and the 14th Century aqueduct of Puente del Águila. The variety of cultures, traditions and architectural styles on display reflect the diversity brought to the Iberian Peninsula by, amongst others, the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors throughout the last 2000 years. The influence left by these civilisations is still clearly evident in contemporary Nerja.

The area surrounding the town is renowned for an abundance of natural beauty and one of the best points from which to gain magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding coastal area is the Balcon de Europa. This wide cliff top promenade has been constructed on the site of the ancient Moorish castle that once stood high above Nerja. Access is also available to the fascinating cave system located three kilometres from the centre of town, which contains a number of archaeological treasures, including 20,000 year old cave paintings, a concert hall, a subterranean fountain and the longest stalactite in the world.
