Visitors have been attracted to the Iberian Peninsula for thousands of years and continue to enjoy the culture that is a fundamental aspect of Portuguese life. This beautiful European country consists of six diverse regions that offer a range of attractive features along 832 km of Atlantic coastline.
In the north west corner of Portugal is the Green Coast, or Costa Verde. This agricultural region boasts undulating hills, impressive mountains, fertile valleys and the cities of Guimarães, Viana do Castelo, Porto and Braga with it’s stunning baroque churches, splendid parks and the legendary stairs of Bom Jesus.
The Costa de Prata, or Silver Coast lies south of the Costa Verde in the centre of Portugal’s west coast. The region is renowned for impressive architecture, historical and religious sites, gorgeous clear beaches and quaint fishing villages including, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria and Nazaré, which is one of the finest on the Costa de Prata.
South of the Silver Coast is the Costa de Lisboa (Lisbon Coast). This region is the location for Portugal’s capital, Lisbon and also numerous sandy beaches and fishing villages, for example Sesimbra. To the east lay the Montanhas, or mountains. This dramatic area boasts amazing views and the main mountain range in Portugal, the Serra da Estrela. South of the Montanhas stretches the Planicies, or plains, that reach all the way to the popular Algarve region in the south of Portugal. The majority of tourists in Portugal are attracted to the fabulous resorts that are located all along the Algarve coast.
The Portuguese islands of Madeira are situated in the Atlantic Ocean 545 km from the north African coast and 964 km from Lisbon. The archipelago consists of eight main islands and a few minor islets that provide natural conservation areas for a huge variety of flora and fauna. The villages, towns and cities across Madeira offer visitors an abundance of attractions in a perfect island setting.
To the north, 1,460 km from the northern coast of Portugal are the nine islands that make up the Azores. The scenic archipelago is famous for providing tranquillity and a unique charm in a landscape filled with lush vegetation and dramatic volcanic features. São Miguel is the largest island in the group and home to the regional capital, Ponta Delgada.
