Reus is located on the north east coast of Spain, a short distance from the Mediterranean Sea within the Province of Tarragona. The town was founded in the 13th Century and grew economically and culturally influential during the late 1800s. Visitors to Reus discover a modern, progressive and innovative town with a unique culture and a vibrant charm that is illustrated throughout this dynamic municipality.
Even though, Reus is the birthplace and childhood home of Antoni Gaudí the dominating architect in the town’s design is Domènech i Montaner. The finest examples of Reus's stunning modern architecture are found at Casa Navàs and the Institut Pere Mata, both were designed and built by Montaner. The wide range of modern buildings and monuments throughout Reus reflect the affluence available to the town’s bourgeoisie throughout the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. In 1882 the beautiful Baroque Teatro Fortuny was completed and the recently renovated Teatro Bartrina was re-opened to the public in 1997.
The most imposing feature of the centre of Reus is the 16th Century Church of St Pere boasting a remarkable octagonal bell tower from which visitors are offered panoramic views of the Costa Daurada coastline, through beautifully positioned windows high in the tower. This Gothic church used the pre-existing Romanesque church of Santa Maria as a foundation for this impressive structure. Among the numerous churches within the town the splendid Sanctuary Church of Misericordia is also noteworthy.
Access is available to a number of excellent museums in Reus and at the Salvador Vilaseca Museum on Llibertat Square there is a fantastic exhibition dedicated to the town’s most famous son, Gaudi. The Regional History Museum contains paintings, drawings and sculptures by the important artists Marià Fortuny and Joan Rebull and both the Museu d’Art I Història de Reus and Centre d'Art Cal Massó offer superb collections. Also popular is the Reading Centre, a cultural association, which has a valuable library and a number of significant works of art.
