Espana Spain Spain is made up of diverse regions with a unique art, history and culture. Visitors have been attracted to the Iberian Peninsula for thousands of years and continue to enjoy the food and music that are a fundamental aspect of Spanish life.

montserrat monastery • On the East coast, built into the mountains above Barcelona, is the historic Monserrat Monastery.
• Toledo, south of Madrid, has an intact medieval city with impressive ramparts and numerous ancient gates. The architecture is astounding and the attractions in the town rival any in Spain.
• A little further north and the mountains of the Pyrenees are another stark contrast to the golden beaches for which Spain is most famous.
• On the Bay of Biscay, which lies across the northern coast of Spain, is Bilbao world famous for its postmodern Guggenheim Museum. To the east is San Sebastien one of the most fashionable areas on the bay whilst to the west is the pilgrimage centre of Santiago.

la tomatina • At the foot of the Pyrenees for a week in July the village of Pamplona hosts the St Fermin Festival. A celebration culminating in the Bull Run, a tradition in which masses of people are chased through the narrow streets of the town by stampeding bulls.
• Bizarre festivals are common throughout Spain and Valencia is the stage for La Tomatina. The last Wednesday in August heralds the appointed time for the entire town to engage in a massive tomato fight.

La Alhambra • Above Granada, in the south, set against the Sierra Nevada mountain range is the awe-inspiring La Alhambra. Constructed by Moorish kings during the 13th and 14th centuries the La Alhambra contains numerous palaces, gardens and fortifications.
• Further south and by far the most popular tourist destination in Spain is the Costa del Sol. Resorts all along the coastline cater for a wide range of interests from elite golf courses and designer boutiques to ancient relics and artworks.
