Millions
of visitors each year discover a vast array of attractions on the
dynamic island of Tenerife. A huge mountain range in the centre of
the island effectively creates two different climates on this relatively
small atoll. The south is hot and dry with an arid desert-like landscape,
whilst the cooler northern region is a lush, tropical paradise with
exotic flora and fauna. At the heart of the island is Las Cañadas
Natural Park, a protected zone 17 kilometres wide with amazing lava
formations, steep cliffs and volcanic rocks. This is the location
for the island's major landmark; the volcanic crater of Mount Teide,
which at 3,718 metres high is Spain's tallest peak and the third tallest
volcano in the world.
The man made resort of Playas de las Americas is the largest and liveliest of the resorts in Tenerife and boasts fine golden sandy beaches. About 5 km from Playa De Las Americas, in the south of the island, is the beautiful natural harbour of La Caleta and small resort of Playa Fanabe. The larger town of Adeje is situated 3 km inland and offers a comprehensive range of facilities in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The
nearby town of Icod de los Vinos is known as the “Town of the Mythological
Dragon Tree;” a tree which has grown on Tenerife for thousands of
years. This scenic town boasts the awesome Cueva del Viento (Cave
of the Wind), which is the largest volcanic cavity in the world. Further
north is Candelaria a famous pilgrimage site and location of the splendid
Basilica de la Virgen de la Candelaria.
Tenerife's most appealing attribute is the huge diversity of cultures and landscapes that are on display, from stunning volcanoes to enigmatic pyramids. These qualities continue to attract visitors from around the world who find that Tenerife is in a prime position in the Atlantic Ocean from which to explore the Canary Archipelago.
