Flamenco
Dance in Spain Overview |
|
|
| The Baile, or flamenco dance represents
the iconic image of this traditional Spanish art form. The gestures,
movements and gorgeous costumes incorporated into the dance over the
past 400 years have become instantly recognisable around the world.
|
| As with the vocal form, the dance of flamenco
is usually one of three popular styles, grande, intermedio or pequeño.
The baile grande, in particular, retains elements of the traditional
dances introduced to southern Spain by nomad gypsies believed to have
originated in India. |
|
The flamenco dance is largely improvised within
a traditional framework that is characterised by the elaborate
toe and heel clicking steps of the men's dance, known as Zapateado,
and the graceful body and hand movements of the traditional women's
dance. Time-honoured versions of flamenco are often accompanied
by jaleo, which can only be described as rhythmic finger snapping,
hand clapping, and loud, enthusiastic shouting.
|
| Those aspects of the flamenco that reflect the wide
ranging and cosmopolitan originsof the dance include the repetition
of foot movements as a percussive complement to the vocals, the unusual
out turned position of the legs, the sharp angles held by the body
and arms of the dancers and the emphasised splayed open fingers of
their hands. |
|
This special blend of indigenous ancient Andalusian
folk traditions with a number of vibrant cultures has encouraged
the continual modification and refinement of the flamenco style.
For example, castanets are a specific Andalusian addition to the
baile and although they are not traditional to flamenco they have
become inextricably linked with the art form. |
Flamenco is currently enjoying a massive resurgence
of interest within Spain and across the world, from Japan to Latin
America. A new generation of flamenco dancers have concentrated
on the fervour and passion expressed in the dance extending the
popular appeal of flamenco to include the attention of an international
audience. |
