At the heart of southern Spain's most authentic and expressive art form is the Canto, or flamenco song. Considered the source of inspiration for all flamenco styles the earliest forms of this traditional art had a purely vocal basis, simply accompanied by rhythmical clapping of hands, known as the toque de palmas.
The basic flamenco song is an expression of the intense emotions felt by the oppressed peoples of the Iberian Peninsula and beyond. To the unpractised ear this outpouring of feelings can at first sound a little discordant, as though there is no fixed rhythmic pattern to the vocals, although their unique and addictive qualities quickly become apparent.

The songs of flamenco are usually one of three distinct and popular styles; grande, or hondo meaning grand, or deep; intermedio, which translates as intermediate; and pequeño, or small. Grande produces tragic, intense and philosophical songs filled with duende, which describes the transformation of the musician by the depth of the emotions being evoked. Intermedio has a less intense tempo and the music occasionally reflects an Oriental flavour, whilst pequeño features songs expressing enthusiasm for love, and all natural life taken from the ancient folk traditions of Andalusia.

Due to the development of individual genres and regional variations, popular styles also include; the airy and light bulerías, the more somber soleares and it's less serious descendant, the alegrías; the fandangos grandes, a sober adaptation of ancient Andalusian folk traditions; the malagueñas, a derivative of the fandangos; and cantos grandes such as the gorgeous siguiriyas gitanas and saetas.

The wide varieties of flamenco styles are physically demanding on the vocalist requiring specific and well practised breathing techniques and perfect muscle control. The techniques customarily employed by contemporary flamenco vocalists to produce the powerful chants popular in today’s cantos can be dated back to the 8th Century.
