One
of the most prolific figures in 20th Century art was born in Malaga
on October 25th 1881. Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a force of culture
in Spain and throughout the world producing more than 22.000 works
of art during his lifetime, in a diverse range of mediums including
sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, stage design and graphic arts. The
genius and energy within Picasso drove him to continue to work right
up to his death in April of 1973.
Picasso was the first-born child to Don José Ruiz Blasco and his
young wife Doña María Francisca Picasso López. Don José held a respected
position within the 19th Century community in Malaga as professor
of the Malaga School of Fine Art and director/curator/administrator
of the tiny City Hall museum. The celebrated birth of Pablo Picasso
took place at No. 36 Plaza de Riego, which is now called La Plaza
de la Merced.

During Picasso's childhood
Malaga was a typical Andalusian city with no crowds, traffic jams,
or tourism, just clean, unpaved streets filled with numerous taverns
and cafes that by night, echoed with the sound of flamenco singing.
The light in the southern tip of Spain is considered to create some
of the best aesthetic effects in the world that would have been
of great significance to the development of Picasso's artistic perspective.
Even though Picasso denied any importance to his early life and
origins, the influence of his heritage is an unmistakable thread
running through his art. Growing up in a household with a majority
of women including his mother; his two younger sisters, Lola and
Conchita, his two aunts, his grandmother and the maidservant, obviously
had an impact during his childhood. The significance of the feminine
role is reflected in the central themes of Picasso's art and in
his extreme and passionate personal relationships. |

The family left Malaga in September 1891 moving
first to La Coruña and then a few years later to Barcelona. In
1895 before their departure from the Galicia region Picasso's
youngest and favourite sister Conchita died of diphtheria at the
age of 8 years old, her death was a final, tragic blow for the
Ruiz Picasso family in La Coruña. Following a brief return to
Malaga the family decided to make a new start in the promising
city of Barcelona in the region of Catalonia.
The following year at 15 years of age, Picasso was admitted to
the advanced classes at the Royal Academy of Art in Barcelona.
Due to his natural aptitude as a skilled draughtsman and with
financial backing from his family, Picasso went on to study at
the San Fernando Academy of Art in Madrid during 1897. From these
foundations Picasso's work became more than fine art, often acting
as a catalyst for change in the 20th Century.
