Spanish New Year
Epiphany, On 6th January has traditionally been a significant date during the Christmas festivities in Spain. The Fiesta de los tres Reyes Mages, or The festival of the three Magic Kings' symbolically celebrates the arrival of the Magi.
The night of the 5th January marks the onset of this eagerly anticipated fiesta with the appearance of the Three Kings (Los Reyes). Traditionally, Los Reyes ride into town on horses to distribute gifts to the children of the municipality. The children are thrilled by the whole event and it is customary for their shoes, filled with grass or grain to be left on their doorstep for the kings' camels. As the Kings approach the outskirts of town their arrival is announced with a splendid fireworks display. The town's band and entire population accompany the colourful procession through the streets to the main church.
For the occasion the Kings wear long cloaks of velvet and fur, their helpers are dressed in traditional apron-like robes and all their faces are painted. During the procession the Kings and their helpers shower the crowds with sweets and confetti. Upon arrival at the church short speeches are made to explain the significance of Epiphany. Finally, the Kings from their “thrones” distribute presents to the children of the town. Mass on the morning of 6th January is a key event that is attended by the whole town. The remainder of the day is shared with friends and family, typically, eating and drinking. The preparation and organisation of the Fiesta de los tres Reyes Mages is undertaken by the festeros as part of their year long duties and donations are collected throughout the Epiphany celebrations for the approaching summer fiestas.
