Badajoz Tourist Information

Badajoz, considerate the key of Portugal, is placed at the banks of Guadiana River, near the Portuguese frontier. Then, if you arrive by plane, we suggest you rent a car at Sevilla or Cordoba airports, located nearby to this province. But, you can also consider hire a car in some of our provider’s offices, just in Badajoz city centre.

From the three most important town of Extremadura (Badajoz, Cáceres and Trujillo), this one was inhabited by Romans as Colonia Pacensis to the Moors as Badaljóz. The city gained enormous political and military relevance when it was Taifa kingdom in the 11th century. But reconquered in the 13th century by the Christian Monarchs, this town reinforced its fighting spirit due to its location, border between Spain and Portugal.

For that reason if you visit old part of Badajoz you will easily find their Arab heritage. The Alcazaba dominates the whole defence network and was declared Historic-Artistic Site, or its Almohad walls surround beautiful gardens and the Palace of the Dukes of Roca where is housed the Regional Archaeological Museum.

From the Alcazaba we suggest you take a walk through the most picturesque streets till the square Plaza de San José, Plaza Alta (this one is made of 15th century porches) or Plaza de España where you will find the City Hall and the cathedral. In the surroundings of Plaza de España you can enjoy the cuisine of Badajoz with ancient recipes made with local products (like paprika, potatoes, excellent sausages) and all with Designation of Origin Ribera del Guadiana wines.

But you have a whole province to discover. Towns that will take us to prehistoric Dolmens, castles and white little villages among holm-oak and cork-oak forests (Raya, Vega del Guadiana, Land of Barros…). You will find in the way the capital of Extremadura, Mérida, called Emerita Augusta by Roman inhabitants or attend the Merida Classical Theatre Festival. Badajoz is crossed by Via de la Plata which was a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela during Middle Ages (the Silver Road goes from Cadiz to Oviedo). Not far from this road, you can find natural park of Montragüe and Cornalvo.

Enjoy your trip!!
