Barcelona Airport, also known as El Prat Airport, is located south-west of the city of Barcelona, just 10 km from this important city. It´s sited between the city limits of El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans and Sant Boi.
Nowadays Barcelona Airport is established as the second largest airport in Spain behind Madrid Barajas Airport, but the first in Cataluña and the Mediterranean coast. Most of the traffic at this airport serves domestic, European and North African destinations and have minor flights to Southeast Asia, Latin America and North America. Between these domestic flights we can emphasize the Barcelona-Madrid air shuttle service importance, also known as the Pont Aeri or Puente Aéreo. This was the world´s busiest route until 2008 and registered the highest number of flight operations (about 971 per week) in 2007.
For all these reasons, Barcelona Airport is considered a main hub base for some airlines like Spanair or Vueling and a focus city for Air Europa or Iberia. Especially after the creation of operating bases from Vueling and Clickair at this airport, the traffic of low-cost airlines has grown significantly.
Check on arrival, depending on your needs, the easiest transportation way:
- Train: the airport is accessible by RENFE commuter train on the line North with main stops at Barcelona Sants railway station or Passeig de Gracia railway station with transfer to the Barcelona Metro system.
- Bus: you can access by the TMB public bus (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona) on line 46 every 18 minutes from Plaça España or a scheduled private bus line from Plaça Catalunya.
- Taxi: you can also find taxi stops available at each terminal.
- Car: just if you drive from or to Barcelona city with your own car, this airport provides you approximately 24000 parking places in its different terminals.
