Bilbao Airport is located in the municipality of Loui, just about 9km to Bilbao city. Nowadays this is the main airport of the Basque Country and northern Spain and famous for its new terminal opened in 2000 and designed by Santiago Calatrava. This new terminal, commonly known as La Paloma, was built with an elegant design, with two symmetrical wings and a sharp tip at its centre.
There are basically two events which have been increased the number of passengers using Bilbao Airport. On the one hand, as soon as the old terminal was renewed due to its saturated situation, this airport has seen a constant increase in its traffic number. On the other, since the opening of the Guggenheim museum and the increase of tourist interest in the city which was reflected directly in its traffic. Then, Bilbao Airport becomes the most important hub in northern Spain and its traffic continues to rise.
Most of the traffic at this airport serves domestic flights (Alicante, Sevilla, Valencia, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Madrid, Barcelona or Malaga) and have less minor international flights, only to some European main destinations (Paris, London, Lisbon, Frankfurt or Brussels).
This increase of traffic passengers has represented also an increase of car hire companies and car hire fleet. Without any doubt, just if you arrive by business or to enjoy northern Spain on holidays, this is the most convenient way to start your visit.
Bilbao city has long been a major destination for tourists and attracts a constant influx of visitor over the course of the year. Much of Bilbao life is based around the city´s Deusto University, tourism trade or visitors who come here attracted by a number of fairly new and remarkable attractions, including Museo Guggenheim.
Just if you take your vehicle for a short trip from Bilbao you will find wealth of attractions, towns and villages well worth a visit. Some of the most attractions close to the city are the towns of Gatika, Gernika, Durango and Balmaseda. But if you have time enough, don´t miss to discover the cities of San Sebastian or Santander, easily reached from Bilbao by car, bus or train.
