The province of Cadiz is located int the southern of Spain. Its capital, the city of Cadiz, with the same name, is oldest city in Western Europe. This city has more than 3000 years of history. The original Iberian inhabitants lived here and future civilizations of Tarshish and Phoenicians visited these lands more than thousand years ago. Around 1100 b.C. was built and founded the old Gadirï as an important trading post for lot of civilizations based on the shipping commerce.
This province was quite important in the discovery and colonization of America due to Chirstopher Columbus and other sailors set sail from these ports on their expeditions to the New Continent.
But was in the 18th century, when Cadiz was dominated by the prosperous growth of overseas trade, giving the city its cosmopolitan character. This situation introduced new liberal ideas and opened the doors for democracy, with the drawing of the constitution in 1812 (currently know as La Pepa).
Nowadays Cadiz still preserves their maritime commerce origins in their port area. Port of Cadiz is not only used for commercial activities, but to develop fishing, passengers and sailing. We recommend you come to visit the city when they celebrate its well-known Cadiz Carnival. In the 16th century, due to an important trade with the port of Venice, they copied the carnival. Since then it has become the liveliest and most dazzling carnival town in mainland Spain. Without any doubt in Cadiz Carnival music is king, famous for its amusing and creative characters and satirical song groups (chirigotas, comparsas, romanceros or quartets) each year performed in Gran Teatro Falla.
