Cordoba Tourist Info
Cordoba or Cordova, in English, is one of the eight provinces of Andalusia, southern Spain, and the second biggest province by surface. Its capital, called with the same name, is located on the banks of the Guadalquivir river and was originally founded in ancient Roman times as Corduba. This location, close to the river and with easy access to the mining resources of the Sierra Morena satisfied the population’s needs.
Geographical factors as well as atmospheric changes influence in the climate in Cordoba. Then it can be considered Mediterranean with Continental features too, as the city generates its own micro-climate. The city has a high sunshine rate, with an average of 143 clear day and only 76 cloudy days. That’s a very good reason to come to Andalusia and deep into this province culture and traditions.
This city has an enormous heritage of culture and monuments due partly to its strategic position and to the wealth of remains left by different inhabitants. Although it had Roman origins, when it was captured by the Muslims, Corboba has become a privileged city during its vast Caliphal civilization. Then in the 10th century was considered one of the most brilliant and advanced cities in the world, as well as an important cultural, political and economic centre.
Today Corboba is a moderately-sized modern city, with one of the most extensive historical heritages in the world and lot of reminders of when it was the thriving capital of the Caliphate. For that reason, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984 with many architectural treasures like the Mosque-Cathedral, Alcazar de los Reyes Católicos, the Jewish Quarter, the Roman Temple or, in its surroundings, the archaeological remains of Medina Azahara city (Medinat al-Zahra).
The easiest way to access to Corboba will be by car, bus or train. Take note, this city is connected by high speed trains to the main Spanish cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Malaga and Zaragoza. Just on arrival to Corboba AVE Railway Station, included in the Spanish high-speed lines network, you can rent your car and drive freely in the city and surroundings.
Don´t miss its varied gastronomy which still keeps a roman and Arab influence. The Romans introduce the use of olive oil and set the norms for the commonly known as Mediterranean cuisine. But the Arab and Jewish influence, too, can be seen in the use of dried fruit, vegetables, in the mixture of sweet and sour flavours in cakes and sweets. No one can really appreciate Cordoba without trying and enjoying its cuisine.
