San Sebastian Tourist Info

San Sebastián, known officially as Donostia-San Sebastián is the capital city of the province of Guipuzcoa, in the Basque Country, Locals call themselves donostiarras, both in Basque and Spanish.

The city lay at the end of the River Urumea, and has been built to a large extent over wetlands of the river during the last couple of centuries.

Shaped by history, San Sebastian start his history as a fishing village; grew as a market town and military fort with the invasion by Napoleon's troops; Donostia has been almost completely destroyed in 1813 by battle against the Anglo-Portuguese. It was chosen by Queen Isabel II and the Royal Family's summer residence and began to flourish as a top class tourist city. In the late 19th century San Sebastian emerged as a city of culture, full of amenities. Its majestic buildings overall along the coast line and their eclectic style, give it a stately character that has adapted well to changing times.
