Vitoria Tourist info

Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital city of the province of Álava in northern Spain. It is the second largest Basque city, after Bilbao. The dwellers of the city are called Vitorianos or Gasteiztarras

The city is served by Vitoria Airport. Currently the only airline with normal passenger services is Iberia with regulars flights to Madrid and Barcelona. Even dough the airport is well connected with the city and car rentals are available in the main hall.

- The old part of the city, is very well conserved and contains a number of remarkable monuments: Casa del Cordon a house from the XV century, the cathedral of Sta. Maria XIV century, the Museum of Archaeology and the Museum of Natural Sciences hold in the Torre de Doña Otxanda.

-The old city: el ensanche, was built south of the city centre during the XIX century where is the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca a square where the “Fiestas de la Blanca” start, this fiesta have developed over many years in Vitoria, has many traditions and religious observances with a big choice of activity for children and adults, and many of the events take place on the square of the same name. On the first day, the crowds in the square to wait for the clock to strike six in the evening, to announce the commencement of merriment. The opening event is the 'Descent of Celedon', a character in fancy dress flying across the square on a wire. Religious ceremonies, music, children's activities, bull fighting, theatre and sports are all on the agenda over the following days. ,Los Arquillos, and the Plaza Nueva a square where every Sunday morning there is a street market.

- Old city south: the Paseo de Fray Francisco is a wide street sided by mansions, many of which have been recently adapted for public use: the Palace of Ajuria Enea the residence of the president of the community, the Museum of Arts, Museo de la Armería and Museo Fournier de Naipes.
