Festes de Gracia Overview |
|
|
| The Festes de Gracia is a Catalonian celebration
boasting over a hundred years of tradition, held on the 15th of August
each year to commemorate the Assumption. During the week of festivities
that mark one of Barcelona's most important fiestas, this Mediterranean
city explodes with fun, excitement, colour and fireworks. |
|
Annually, the people of Gracia make a huge
collective effort leading up to the festival, involving extensive preparations
to decorate every inch of the district with innovative, imaginative designs. A
highly regarded competition is held each year to honour the best and most
elaborately decorated street, which fuels the intensity of the local designers to
thrill the expectant audience, resulting in a spectacular array of sculptures, effigies,
awnings and all manor of adornment.
|
| The seven days of festivities and revelry are punctuated with
an amazing amount of firecrackers, fireworks and bonfires with the regular appearances
of giants, castellers; and traditional local demon-like characters, the correfocs. The incredible
atmosphere during Festes de Gracia is similar to that of an open-air street party with live music
performed each day in the main streets and squares, from the afternoon until well into the early
hours of the next day. |
|
As one of the major street events held in Catalunya during August Gracia
welcomes all visitors to join in the fun, relax and appreciate the fantastic sights and sounds on display.
There is something for everyone amongst the delights available throughout Festes de Gracia from a wide
range of activities specifically aimed at children to the more mature enjoyment of dance, food and drink with
local specialities consistently proving their universal popularity. |
