La Tomatina Overview |
|
|
| La Tomatina is one of the most bizarre and
enjoyable festivals to take place each year in the south east region of Spain.
This awesome fiesta is held on the last Wednesday in August at the peak of the
tomato season in the Province of Valencia. The small village of Buņol is host to
this most colourful ritual that began as a practical joke in 1945, and in typical
Spanish style, has grown to become one of the most popular festivals in the entire
Iberian Peninsula. |
|
On the morning of La Tomatina the town's people
and visitors specifically attending the festival gather together to literally paint
the town red with tomatoes. The village's normal 9000 residents increases four
fold during the festival, bringing the numbers celebrating La Tomatina to over
30000.
|
| The commencement of the riotous behaviour is marked by the
launch of five bulbous, tomato-packed rockets into the sky above the heads of
the expectant crowds. At this point the otherwise sober citizens of Buņol stage an
almost unbelievable tomato war that lasts up to two hours. |
|
During this mass tomato frenzy 125,000 kilos of ripe tomatoes
are thrown with very few restrictions. The only rules during La Tomatina are that anyone
on the streets that day is a prime target and that no projectiles, other than squashed tomatoes
may be used. The clean up operation following La Tomatina is an event in it's own right as
the trades people and townsfolk transform their once beautiful village from a "bloodbath" back
to it's former glory. As is the custom during fiestas throughout Spain the day's intense festivities
also include the immense enjoyment of local food, wine and music, which are all available in and
around the main town square. |
